- There is a lot of misinformation about UARTs, even right here in this group.
- Yes, it's true that the original 16550 had bugs that made the FIFOs unuseable.
- However, as far as I know, they've been out of production since 1987, so I
- really doubt that you'll find one now unless you're into unsoldering UARTs
- from the motherboards of the early PS/2 line...
-
- It'a also true that many (most) early 16550 clones (Western Digital, "MX")
- were buggy. This seems to have been cleaned up during the past decade.
-
- There is also a big myth about 16550AF UARTs handling faster serial speeds
- than 16550A UARTs. I can only surmise that this was an accidental
- misinterpretation of promotional material which was then spread by people who
- didn't know what they were talking about. The 16550A is perfectly capable of
- handling 115200 bps using a standard 1.8432 MHz crystal (higher with faster
- crystals); comparing the 16550A and 16550AF spec sheets side by side reveals
- only slight differences in the CPU interface which suggest that the 16550AF
- might be better suited to faster I/O busses (e.g. ~33 MHz VL-Bus or PCI vs. ~8
- MHz ISA or EISA).
-
- National has changed the prefix of the 16550 from "NS" to "PC", and a quick
- glance at http://webdirect.national.com/ tells me that the current model is
- "PC16550D"... but, to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing wrong with
- any chip from the "A" revision on.

-
- These days, it doesn't really matter.
